wire-frame model कंप्यूटर ग्राफ़िक्स में प्रयोग होने वाले 3-dimensional (3D) object का एक visual presentation होता है.
दूसरे शब्दों में कहें तो, “wire-frame model एक प्रक्रिया है जिसके द्वार 3D objects का visual display किया जाता है.”
यह एक three dimensional model है, इसमें lines तथा curves के द्वारा real world के 3-D objects का skeletal representation किया जाता है.
वह प्रत्येक object जो wireframe model को बनाता है उसे independent रूप से draw और position करना पड़ता है. इसलिए यह model बहुत ही time consuming है.
इसके द्वारा हम solid और solid surface को construct एवं manipulate कर सकते है.
हम इस model के द्वारा उन सभी आंतरिक components और opposite sides को भी represent कर सकते है जो कि देखने पर दिखती नहीं है और hidden रहती है.
surface तथा solid modeling की तुलना में, wireframe model बहुत ही कम complex है. और 3D images को इसके द्वारा आसानी से represent किया जा सकता है.
Wire-frame rendering बहुत ही simple होती है और इसे तेजी से calculate भी किया जा सकता है. इनका ज्यादतर प्रयोग उन cases में किया जाता है जहाँ high screen frame rate की आवश्यकता होती है. जब हमें कभी बेहतर graphical detail की जरूरत होती है तो wire frame की शुरुवाती rendering के बाद surface textures अपने आप add हो जाते है. इससे designer तेजी से solid को review कर सकते है और object को अपनी इच्छानुसार rotate कर सकते है.
wire-frame format का प्रयोग direct numerical control (DNC) machine tools के लिए programming tool paths में भी किया जाता है.
