asymptotic notation जो है वह expressions होते हैं जिनका प्रयोग अल्गोरिथम की complexity (कठिनाई) को प्रस्तुत करने के लिए किया जाता है.

अल्गोरिथम की complexity को हम दो दृष्टिकोणों (perspectives) से analyze कर सकते हैं:- Time और Space.

time complexity:- यह एक function है जो कि किसी अल्गोरिथम को run करने में लगने वाले time को describe करता है.

space complexity:- यह एक function है जो कि किसी अल्गोरिथम द्वारा लिए गये memory की मात्रा को describe करता है. कभी कभी हम space complexity को ignore कर देते है क्योंकि algorithm द्वारा लिया गया space बहुत कम होता है. परन्तु यह कभी कभी time-complexity के जितना ही important होता है.

एक algorithm की complexity को प्रस्तुत करने के लिए बहुत से प्रकार के asymptotic notations का प्रयोग किया जाता है. नीचे आपको asymptotic notations दिए जा रहे हैं जिनका प्रयोग time complexity को कैलकुलेट करने के लिए किया जाता है:-

• O− Big Oh
• Ω− Big omega
• θ− Big theta
• o− Little Oh
• ω− Little omega

O: Asymptotic Upper Bound

‘O’ (Big-Oh) सबसे ज्यादा प्रयोग किये जाने वाला notation है. यह worst-case scenario (सबसे बुरी स्थिति) को describe करता है. यह algorithm के upper bound को प्रस्तुत करता है.

function f(n) = O (g (n)), यदि और केवल यदि positive constant C मौजूद है और इस प्रकार-

f (n) ⩽ k.g (n)f(n)⩽k.g(n) for n>n0n>n0 in all case

इसलिए, function f(n) के लिए function g(n) एक upper bound है. क्योंकि function g(n) जो है वह f(n) से अधिक तेजी से बढ़ता है.

Ω: Asymptotic Lower Bound

Big Omega (Ω) notation जो है वह best case scenario को describe करता है। यह algorithm के lower bound को प्रस्तुत करता है.

function f (n) = Ω (g (n)) यदि और केवल यदि positive constant C और n₀ मौजूद है और इस प्रकार-

F (n) ≥ k* g (n) for all n, n≥ n₀

θ: Asymptotic Tight Bound

theta (θ) notation जो है वह algorithm की दोनों upper bound और lower bound को describe करता है. तो हम कह सकते है कि यह सटीक asymptotic behavior को डिफाइन करता है.

function f (n) = θ (g (n)) यदि और केवल यदि positive constant k₁, k₂ और k₀ मौजूद है और इस प्रकार-

k₁ * g (n) ≤ f(n)≤ k₂ g(n)for all n, n≥ n₀
